Hungary Misses First Deadline To Pay 200 Million Fine Imposed By Ecj

Hungary misses first deadline to pay €200 million fine imposed by ECJ

Orban government says it will not pay 'blackmail' fine

Sanctions imposed by the bloc over failure to comply with EU law on asylum seekers

Hungary has missed the first deadline to pay a €200 million fine imposed by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) for failing to comply with EU law on asylum seekers.

The ECJ ruled in March that Hungary had breached its obligations under EU law by refusing to relocate asylum seekers from Greece and Italy.

The Hungarian government has said it will not pay the fine, which was imposed on a daily basis, and has accused the EU of "blackmail".

The fine is the latest in a series of sanctions imposed on Hungary by the EU over its asylum policies.

In 2017, the EU launched an infringement procedure against Hungary for refusing to comply with its obligations under the Dublin Regulation, which requires asylum seekers to be processed in the first EU country they enter.

The ECJ subsequently ruled that Hungary had breached the Dublin Regulation and ordered it to pay a fine of €200 million.

The Hungarian government has refused to pay the fine, and has said that it will not comply with the Dublin Regulation.

The EU has said that it will continue to take action against Hungary for its failure to comply with EU law.

The European Commission has said that it will consider taking further legal action against Hungary, including referring the case to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU).

The CJEU is the highest court in the EU, and its rulings are binding on all EU member states.

If the CJEU rules against Hungary, the country could face further fines or other sanctions.
