Washington Commanders: A Season in Review
A New Era Begins
The 2022 season marked a new era for the Washington Commanders, as the team embarked on its first season under the leadership of head coach Ron Rivera and general manager Martin Mayhew. The team also unveiled a new name and logo, shedding the Redskins moniker that had been associated with the franchise for over 80 years.
A Promising Start
The Commanders started the season strong, winning their first three games. Taylor Heinicke, who had taken over as the team's starting quarterback during the previous season, continued to impress, leading the team to a 7-5 record through the first 12 games. However, the team hit a rough patch in December, losing four of their final five games to finish the season with a 9-8 record.
Key Acquisitions
During the offseason, the Commanders made several key acquisitions, including quarterback Carson Wentz and wide receiver Jahan Dotson. Wentz, a former Pro Bowl selection, was acquired from the Indianapolis Colts in a trade, while Dotson was a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. These additions were expected to provide a boost to the team's offense, which had struggled to score points consistently in previous seasons.
Solid Defense
Despite the team's offensive struggles, the Commanders' defense was a bright spot in 2022. Led by defensive tackle Jonathan Allen and cornerback Kendall Fuller, the defense ranked among the top 10 in the NFL in several key categories, including points allowed and takeaways.
Looking Ahead
The Commanders enter the 2023 season with a mix of optimism and uncertainty. The team has several talented players on both sides of the ball, but they will need to improve their offensive consistency if they want to compete for a playoff spot. The quarterback position remains a question mark, as Wentz has yet to fully convince the coaching staff that he is the long-term answer. However, with a solid defense and a young and talented roster, the Commanders have the potential to make a run in the NFC East in 2023.
